Plant Based Kitchen Essentials

Wondering what you need to start (or keep up) a plant based kitchen?

Fruits and vegetables are seasonal and vary by region. I try to keep local, in season produce on hand at all times.

 

Non-perishable – stock your cabinets; these will come in handy for many recipes.

– Canned beans (black, kidney, pinto, chic peas, etc.)

– Brown rice

– Quinoa

– Polenta

– Cornmeal

– Couscous

– Soy sauce

– Rice vinegar

– Apple cider vinegar

– Balsamic vinegar

– Lemon juice

– Tahini

– Canned tomatoes

– Vegetable Broth/cubes

– Olive oil

– Canola oil

– Nutritional yeast flakes

– Nuts (cashews, peanuts, walnuts, etc)

– Almond, Coconut, Rice, Hemp Milk (you can also find a refrigerated versions)

– Pasta (whole wheat, low card, GF or regular)

– Pasta sauce (or sauce making supplies)

– Cereals

– Oatmeal

– Salsa

– Wasa crackers/flat breads/chips if you must

– Chia Seeds (for salads, smoothies and stir fry)

Spices: – fresh spices are always better but not always practical or available

– Garlic powder

– Italian blend

– Tumeric

– Curry powder

– Allspice

– Cinnamon

– Thyme

– Basil

– Saffron

– Parsley

– Black pepper

– Salt

– Red pepper

– Nutmeg

– Sesame Seeds

– Dill

 Other:

– Avocado’s

– Bananas

– Fresh Bread

– Whole Food Protein Bars – I love 22 Days or Picky Bars

Perishables

 Refrigerator

– Garlic cloves

– Onions

– Margarines (soy, non soy, coconut)

– Mayonnaise (Nayonnaise, Veganise or Wildwood’s )

– Tofu (firm & silken)

– Tempeh

– Corn Tortillas

– Flour Tortillas

– BBQ sauce

– Ketchup

– Mustard

– Olives

– Hot peppers

– Red potatoes

– Sweet potatoes

– Parsnips

– Lettuce

– Kale

– Peppers (red, green, orange, yellow)

– Cucumbers

– Zucchini

– Corn

– Celery

– Carrots

– Sprouts

– Hummus

– Milk (Almond, Rice, Soy, Hemp)

Freezer:

– Frozen fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, bananas – although fresh is always better)

– Veggie Burgers – if you can’t or don’t have time to make your own

– Bread (rolls/loaf)

– Frozen veggies (green beans, spinach, broccoli, peppers, corn etc)

– Flour (white, wheat)

– Ginger

– Coconut Milk Ice Cream

I am almost positive that I have forgotten something ‘essential’ forgive me? What are some of your plant based kitchen essentials?

    Wow Nice list. I keep bulgur and lentils to hand almost all of the time as I find cooking them together makes for good tacos, casseroles, neat-loaf type dishes that tend to go over well with my kids.
